I remember the first time I ate an edible.
The anticipation waiting for it to hit was better than the actual high. I decided to take edibles camping in the beautiful interior of BC. We didn’t have access to the industrially made edibles we have access to today.
We trusted our designated cannabis chef to properly incorporate a delicate substance into our food evenly throughout.
If you have any experience cooking with cannabis, you probably read that last sentence and laughed remembering a story where you were a “little” off with your recipe.
I waited for the dragon to emerge from the shadows and dance in the flames of the campfire. My vision for what I thought being high on edibles was going to be like was much different from what this experience turned into.
And even though you are probably guessing this experience wasn’t the greatest, edibles are to this day my favourite method of consumption with cannabis.
Just look at these edibles, how could you not want them?
But this isn’t an article about how great edibles are, it’s about what happens when you take a little too much.
When I first realized I took too much, I thought I could just wait it out. No one has ever died from too much cannabis, and it reminded me of that always helps.
How long does it take to sober up from Weed?
With many ways to consume cannabis, and each way affecting your body differently, there is stuff much research left on this subject. Cannabis potency and a person’s tolerance level.
Concentrates are the most potent form of cannabis, flower and edibles follow behind. This means smoking a dab could last quite a bit longer than smoking a joint, with a much more concentrated high.
Do note that one’s tolerance level plays a big role in determining how long a high would last. Every day smokers with a high weed tolerance will sober up a lot faster than the occasional toker who hits a joint a couple of times at a party.
Generally speaking, the average cannabis high can last anywhere between 30 to 3 hours at its peak, and linger around with minor effects for some time. Right now there is no magic number for how long you should wait for say diving after smoking, so make sure you are Weill aware of your tolerance levels.
Tips on how to sober up from weed fast
1. Don’t Panic:
“Greening out” isn’t just a body feeling, it’s a huge mental barrier that makes you think it’s worse than it is. Making sure you smoking with someone you truly trust is a high help in these cases. Having a reassuring person to keep you thought the bad parts could transition it into a pleasant high.
2. Try water and snacks
If you’re reading this high, your mouth is probably dry and you need to drink some water. The same goes for when you’ve had too much cannabis. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate is key to getting you feeling back to normal.
Whether you prefer water or juice it doesn’t matter, just make sure it is cold and refreshing. Keeping hydrated will help combat the dry mouth and help your focus on the simple act of sipping and swallowing.
Please do not take our suggestion of hydrating as an opportunity to drink alcohol. Drinking a cou[ple cold ones would increase the THC blood concentrations making you much more intoxicated and making the trip a whole lot worse.
Eating small fatty foods helps soothe cannabis in the blood. Consider grazing on nuts, cheese, or yogurt to see if it’s easier to connect the mind and body.
3. Know your limits
This one is a must that we all forget. Knowing how much cannabis you can consume will save you from a night of cold sweats.
However, if you have not smoked cannabis before, or trying a new way of consumption like edibles or taking a dab, it’s always best to start very slow. When taking edibles, start with 10mg and go from there.
If you don’t feel anything in an hour, take another. If you don’t feel anything after that, it wasn’t meant to be.
I truly believe in that philosophy and advise you to take 20mg to start next time you try it. For dabs, take the smallest hit possible and see how you feel after.
If you try to be a hero, you will be the zero.
This is especially true if you ever decide to try a strong cannabis product such as moonrocks.
4. Reach for some Black Pepper
I’m being serious as Neil Young swears by this trick and that man is one experienced toker. I’m not sure if it’s because it changes the state of your mind from being paranoid to, “ohh I’m going to sneeze”, but this stuff works wonders. Chew a couple of peppercorns or sniff them for almost instantaneous relief.
5. Relax and Rest
This one can be hard when the room is spinning and your mind is looking at you exposing how high are, but only time will fix your state of mind.
Curling up on a comfortable couch or your bed in some soft blankets, Costco brand blankets are my favourite, can help put your mind to ease. Taking from meditation, you can always try a couple of deep breaths and focusing on the motion of breathing.
BEWARE you could get stuck in a loop of non-automatic breathing, I bed it happened just now.
6. Try and go for a walk
This depends on where you live. If you’re downtown New York, forget about it. If you’re in a night safe neighbourhood, perfect.
I personally always prefer the beach or forest depending on the time of day. The beach is soothing and relaxing at night with fewer people around and the forest is alive and breathing during the day to guide your way to a safe state of mind.
Exercise has been proven to lower stress levels and what better way to exercise than medicated, even if you are a little more than medicated.
7. Take a Bath or Shower
I’m a man so I don’t get baths, but everyone to their own. I could see how still water could be soothing. Showers however are alive and moving that keep you distracted.
Whenever I am overly medicated and I take a shower, I get the feeling of being in a submarine exiting the matrix. The second I leave the door my mind has changed and I feel like a new person.
8. Distract Yourself
Play video games, chat with friends, watch a movie, clean your house, do anything! If you aren’t nauseous or drowsy, doing something will be your best friend.
I always find myself colouring when high, I get obsessive about staying within the lines.
9. Smoke some CBD
Us budtenders swear by this one, and always tell our clients to purchase a CBD strain just for this occasion. While this method isn’t scientifically proven, the effects of CBD are. This amazing stress reliever can balance your high and in most cases help end your night on a high note.
And that’s all, the top 8 ways you can save yourself when overly medicated. Keep watch for other methods and tips, Cannabis is still a relatively new field that has lots more to come.
